Modular Oxygen Production in Fossil Energy Gasification Systems

Two projects were selected to develop stand-alone oxygen-production technologies for use in coal gasification processes. The new technologies will produce oxygen of at least 95 percent purity for use in small-scale (500 kilowatt to 5 megawatt) modular power plants at significantly lower cost than commercial state-of-the-art oxygen-production technologies.

South Korean company signs first letter of intent to explore deployment of Kemper technology

Southern Company subsidiary Southern Generation Technologies has signed a letter of intent with South Korean company Alps Energy and Kellogg, Brown & Root, LLC (KBR) to evaluate the deployment of the company's proprietary coal gasification technology at the new, 1,000-megawatt (MW) Alps Energy power plant in the Saemangeum Industry & Research Area in South Korea. The agreement underscores the significant international interest in Transport Integrated Gasification - or TRIG™ - the 21st century coal technology at the center of Southern Company subsidiary Mississippi Power's Kemper County energy facility.

DOE Selects Gasification Technology Research Projects for Funding

The Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory has selected seven projects to receive funding through its Gasification Systems Program. The projects conducted through this program are geared toward reducing the cost of coal conversion and mitigating the environmental impacts of fossil-fueled power generation.

WASHINGTON--Today, as part of the Administration’s all-of-the-above energy approach, the Department of Energy has selected four projects to receive funding for next-generation gasification systems that also reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. DOE Marks Major Milestone with Startup of Recovery Act Demonstration Project

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy joined RTI International (RTI) and Tampa Electric Company (TECO) to celebrate the successful startup of a pilot project to demonstrate a warm gas cleanup carbon capture technology in a coal gasification unit at the TECO Polk Power Station near Tampa, Fla. The project, which is approximately $3 million under budget, included $168 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
