Project Description

As part of the CarbonSAFE (Carbon Storage Assurance Facility Enterprise): Integrated CCS Pre-Feasibility Study, University of Kansas, along with the Kansas Geological Survey, will conduct a feasibility study of three of Kansas’ largest CO2 point sources, nearby storage sites (with greater than 50 million metric tons capacity), and potential CO2 transportation networks. Building upon the regional characterization studies conducted under FE0002056, the project will conduct high-level technical sub-basinal evaluations of CO2 storage, including risk assessment, and modeling. Several other partners will also contribute to the project, including: Linde Group, which will evaluate the technical challenges and develop plans for CO2 capture and transportation in Kansas; oil producers Blake Exploration, Casillas Petroleum, Knighton Oil Company, and Stroke of Luck Energy and Exploration which will provide access to CO2 storage site information; the law firm DePew, Gillen, Rathbun, and McInteer (DGRM) which will provide legal and public policy perspectives; and the non-profit Great Plains Institute (GPI), which will coordinate the outreach components of the project.

Project Benefits

The project team will deliver a development plan to address technical requirements, economic feasibility, and public acceptance of a potential commercial-scale deployment of a CO2 storage project at the primary source-sink site at Westar Energy’s Jeffrey Energy Center. This project will generate information to allow DOE to make a determination of the proposed storage complex’s level of readiness for additional development under Phase II, based upon the findings for commercial-scale capture, transportation, and storage sites identified as part of this investigation. This project will support the DOE’s Carbon Storage Program goals to develop and validate technologies that will ensure 99 percent storage permanence, improve storage efficiency while maintaining containment effectiveness, improve industry’s ability to predict CO2 storage capacity to within ±30 percent, and develop Best Practice Manuals for key activities in developing and operating storage projects. The ICKan effort will also support the Carbon Storage Program mission to develop and advance CCS technologies, for widespread commercial deployment in the 2025-2035 timeframe, that will ensure safe, secure, efficient, and cost effective CO2 containment in diverse geologic formations.
