Project Description

This project will develop and optimize a water treatment system, herein called COHO (CO2- H2O), that will use low-grade waste heat and carbon dioxide from flue gas at power plants. COHO will have higher water recovery and will be able to treat more problematic water using less energy compared to state‐of‐the‐art technologies. The goals of the project are to first optimize the system process, including; carbon dioxide and water processing as well as the draw chemistry. Porifera will build, operate, and test the system at a power plant, develop technoeconomic model of COHO, and demonstrate the viability.

Project Benefits

This project will enable the development of a COHO water treatment system that is powered by low-grade heat and carbon dioxide from flue gas. It is anticipated that this technology will reduce the volume of waste water, reduce the energy costs to treat wastewater, expand the capabilities of water treatment, and reduce the cost of carbon capture from flue gas, compared to other state-of-the-art technologies.
