Project Description

The overall project objective is to develop an innovative, low-cost CO2-capture technology for integrated gasification combined cycle-based power plants that is based on absorption on a high-capacity and low-cost aqueous ammoniated solution. SRI, in collaboration with Bechtel Hydrocarbon Technology Solutions, Inc., is conducting a two-phase effort to develop and evaluate SRI’s Ammonium Carbonate-Ammonium Bicarbonate (AC-ABC) technology to capture CO2 and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from coal-based gasification processes and Bechtel’s Pressure Swing Claus Sulfur Recovery Unit (BPSC) which will convert H2S to elemental sulfur. The first phase tested the technology in a bench-scale batch reactor to validate the concept and determine the optimum operating conditions for a small pilot-scale reactor. The second phase will include the design and fabrication of a small pilot-scale test system and testing of the capture technology on a slipstream of real shifted syngas from the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC) in Wilsonville, Alabama.

Project Benefits

This project focuses on developing a high-capacity aqueous ammoniated capture solvent containing ammonium carbonate (AC), which reacts with CO2 to form ammonium bicarbonate (ABC). The system utilizes a single absorber to co-capture CO2 and H2S from syngas, followed by a Bechtel Pressure Swing Claus (BPSC) unit to separate the sulfur from the CO2, increasing efficiency and reducing operating costs.
