8 Rivers Capital, along with Toshiba Corporation, will develop an innovative, first-of-its-kind, oxy-syngas combustor operating at high-pressure with supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) diluent and cooling. This project will advance coal syngas combustion in the environments required by these systems through developing a conceptual design of a syngas-fueled combustor-turbine block for 300MWe, high-pressure, oxy-fuel, SCO2 power system. 8 Rivers will also produce a preliminary detailed design of a 5MWth test combustor and the design of a test program and rig to demonstrate the feasibility of the combustion environment.

Project Benefits

The work would greatly advance the goals of the Clean Coal Research Program, the National Energy Technology Laboratory, and the U.S. Department of Energy. 8 Rivers has performed economic modeling to show that high-pressure, high-temperature, oxy-fuel SCO2 power cycles, and in particular the Allam Cycle, have the potential to produce electricity at a lower cost than current, state-of-the-art thermal power systems that do not use carbon capture, all while capturing nearly 100 percent of produced CO2 and all other air emissions. The Allam Cycle is already under development for use with natural gas. This program would take the critical steps necessary to advance the coal applications for this important technology, providing a clear path to clean, low-cost power generation from coal.
