Energy Department Seeks Information on Transformational Sensing for the Subsurface
Carbon Storage layer image

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy (FE) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) on the development of transformational sensing capabilities for monitoring parameters associated with subsurface carbon dioxide ( CO2) storage.

FE seeks information from a variety of stakeholders on sensors and/or systems that will address the limitations of existing technologies to reduce uncertainty and enable real-time decision-making. In particular, this information should help improve the ability to monitor movement of fluids in the subsurface following CO2 injection and measure critical subsurface properties throughout a commercial-scale storage complex.

The objective of this RFI is to assess relevant state-of-the-art sensor technologies and determine future needs associated with CO2 injection, including:

  • Requirements of the future storage industry for cost-effective monitoring
  • The priority of technology opportunities for developing transformational sensor capabilities for monitoring parameters
  • Ways to improve how technology can be effectively measured at minimum cost.

To review the RFI, please click here . Responses to this RFI are due no later than 8 p.m. ET, Monday, December 3, 2018. Submit responses electronically as an Adobe Acrobat PDF to the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) at: DE-FOA-0001998@netl.doe.gov. Emails should have the subject line “DE-FOA-0001998 – RFI,” with the technical area number.

RFI responses may be used to assist in establishing content for the preparation of future solicitations or competitions. A response to this RFI will not be viewed as a binding commitment to develop or pursue the technologies, projects, or ideas discussed. DOE may also decide to issue an announcement based on consideration of the input received from this RFI or to not issue an announcement at all.

The Office of Fossil Energy funds research and development projects to reduce the risk and cost of advanced fossil energy technologies and further the sustainable use of the Nation’s fossil resources.
