ION Engineering, LLC, along with their partners, aim to advance ION’s solvent-based post-combustion CO2capture process through pilot-scale testing with coal-fired flue gas. Testing of the second-generation solvent will first be conducted at the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC) at small pilot scale to capture CO2from a flue gas stream equivalent to a scale of 0.6 MWe power plant. The solvent will subsequently be tested at the Technology Center Mongstad in a 12 MWe pilot test unit to capture CO2 from an industrial flue gas to simulate coal-fired power generation. ION will conduct parametric and continuous long-term testing of the advanced solvent and analyze solvent performance, degradation, and air emissions under various steady-state operational conditions. A detailed final techno-economic analysis and an environmental, health, and safety assessment will be completed. ION will evaluate the solvent’s ability to meet or exceed DOE’s Carbon Capture Program goal for second generation solvents of 90 percent CO2 capture with a 95 percent CO2 product purity at a cost of $40/tonne CO2 captured by 2025.

Project Benefits

This project focuses on the development and scale-up of a capture process using a multi-component amine. Physical and chemical solvent properties can be manipulated which impact reaction rates and thermal requirements, thereby reducing capital and operating costs. Pilot-scale testing will establish the scalability and technical and economic feasibility of ION’s advanced solvent for post-combustion carbon capture and enable development of a practical technology path for ultimate commercialization of the capture process.
