The project team is identifying and evaluating residual oil zones (ROZs) in the Williston and Powder River Basins through comprehensive reservoir basin evolution modeling, simulation, temperature and saturation logging, and fairway mapping. The presence, extent, and oil saturation of ROZs in the Williston and Powder River Basins is being identified and the oil in place (OIP) and the COstorage potential is being determined. The research has a strong potential to identify many ROZs in both basins, which could promote further domestic oil production and encourage further CO2 capture for utilization in recovering oil from in these and other sedimentary basins.

Project Benefits

This project is focused on identifying and evaluating ROZs in the Williston and Powder River Basins through a variety of enhanced characterization methods. Research and characterization of these reservoirs will provide better estimates of potential COstorage capacity and applicability of enhanced oil recovery operations within the reservoirs. Additionally, this research will develop a best practices manual for the identification, characterization, and evaluation of residual oil zones throughout a variety of similar sedimentary basins. Specifically, this research will utilize comprehensive reservoir basin evolution modeling, simulation, temperature and saturation logging, and fairway mapping to identify the presence, extent, and oil saturation of the residual oil zones in the Williston and Powder River Basins, estimate the residual oil in place and COstorage potential, and develop and repeatable and robust methodologies for residual oil zone identification and utilization in other sedimentary basins.
