This project is developing a well testing technology for leakage detection in carbon storage reservoirs by developing the theoretical basis and numerical tools required for conducting harmonic pulse tests and results interpretation to assist in the validation of CO2 storage permanence. Laboratory experiments will be designed to validate the numerical tools and theory. This will be followed by further development of data assimilation and inversion algorithms for integrating the pulse test data to be demonstrated in the field.

Project Benefits

This project focuses on the monitoring of CO2 in the subsurface by developing a pressure-based inversion data assimilation system. This new pressure-based method is improving an operator’s ability to demonstrate that the CO2 is permanently stored and detect leakage should it occur. Specifically, this project is demonstrating the utility of harmonic pulse testing and developing inversion algorithms for leakage detection. Improved monitoring will contribute to better storage techniques thus reducing CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.
