A Bold New Icon for Excellence in Fossil Energy Research

DOE Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy Chris Smith and NETL Director Dr. Grace Bochenek introduce NETL's new logo

A logo is a critical piece of how an organization conveys its brand to the public, and, with our recent reorganization, it is an appropriate time to make an impressive new adjustment to the way we present our vision and mission in a quick, simple, easy to comprehend form. I am pleased to officially unveil the new NETL Logo.

Our enduring brand, or the emotional response people should have when they think of our organization, is a bedrock for everything we do as an innovator of technological solutions to America’s energy challenges. After much discussion, contemplation, and hard work by our leadership team and our design personnel, we have developed a new logo that we believe will better convey what we do and its importance to our nation’s energy future. A new logo will renew our ability to project a forward-looking innovative laboratory. Our old logo was in place for 17 years, and it is now time to put a 21st Century feel to our public face.

Our new look will continue to emphasize our brand, but will be a fresh, colorful, more flexible design element for a range of communication products.

The logo will represent not only NETL’s commitment to energy research progress, but also a commitment to the strategic values that are at the heart of everything we do—a critical focus on the people of our workforce, business excellence, safety, communication expertise, teamwork, stakeholder loyalty, and environmental consciousness. Whenever our logo appears, it will show a commitment to those standards.

DOE Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy Chris Smith said, “This logo is more than just a new design. It reflects who NETL is—a group of committed professionals pushing the edge of technology development.  And it’s a fitting symbol of one of the Nation’s premier research labs.”

When a venerable energy research organization like NETL takes stock of its past success and sets a new course, the time is right to unveil a new symbol of energy research foresight, strategy, and execution. Our new look was thoughtfully designed to help us convey a 21st Century approach to addressing America’s energy challenges.

Our new logo is a new iconic image that will convey to a new generation our intent to discover, integrate and mature technology solutions to enhance the nation’s energy foundation and protect the environment for future generations.
