NETL's research site in Albany, Oregon, specializes in alloy development.
NETL’s Advanced Alloys Signature Center (AASC) will drive the development of next-generation, high-performance materials needed to generate affordable, clean electricity, support growth in emerging U.S. industries and strengthen America’s position as a world leader in alloy design and production.
NETL Pittsburgh Campus
Advanced magnetics technologies with potential application in energy and electric vehicle manufacturing developed at NETL and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) were recently licensed to Pittsburgh-based startup CorePower Magnetics Inc. to bring them to the private sector.
NETL has expertise in materials development, alloy development and prototype alloy manufacturing based on ingot metallurgy.
NETL has entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center for Research and Development (OMIC R&D) to coordinate the development of new alloys and materials technologies for use in manufacturing applications.

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) announced its intent to fund cost-shared research and development to accelerate the wide-scale deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR)—critical components to achieve the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Veterans Day 2021
Veterans Day recognizes all the men and women who served in our armed forces and offers us a chance to thank our veterans for their service to our nation.  NETL is fortunate to have a robust cadre of veterans on our team, and I’m honored to recognize their service, along with the millions of other veterans across our nation who have selflessly served and defended our nation, our freedoms and our way of life.
NETL’s Mary Anne Alvin, an expert on RareEarthElements, has accepted a nomination from @smecommunity as a 2021-2022 SME Henry Krumb Lecturer for her paper titled “Rare Earth Elements and Critical Materials."
NETL will soon have the opportunity to share its research initiatives in the field of rare earth elements (REEs) and critical minerals (CMs) with the greater mining and engineering communities when Mary Anne Alvin presents before the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME). Her acceptance of the nomination to be a 2021-2022 SME Henry Krumb Lecturer will enable her to present research and findings of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) with SME’s members.
