A team of experienced NETL metallurgical researchers were presenters at the 10th International Symposium on Superalloy 718 and Derivatives 2023 May 14-17 in Pittsburgh. The conference was designed to explore all aspects of metallurgical processing, materials behavior, and microstructural performance for a distinct class of 718-type superalloy and derivatives, which have demonstrated excellent fabricability and heat resistant properties for products like turbine engine disks.

NETL Director Brian Anderson highlighted the expertise of the Lab’s researchers to advance innovations and scientific discoveries that support the development of regional clean hydrogen hubs across America, including a project planned through a partnership with the State of West Virginia, EQT Corp., the nation’s largest natural gas producer, and others.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is recognizing outstanding entrepreneurs and small businesses during National Small Businesses Week, April 30 – May 6. To mark the occasion, NETL’s Small Business Program and the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization will host Opportunity Day at the Lab’s Morgantown campus May 3.

NETL Director Brian Anderson will serve on a panel to discuss the use of Appalachia’s abundant, low-cost energy resources to enable and sustain a regional clean hydrogen hub Tuesday, May 2, during the West Virginia Manufacturing Energy Growth (MEG) Summit at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling.

To get the word out regarding challenges and opportunities to optimize the effects of efforts with other national labs, NETL hosted fellows of the prestigious Oppenheimer Science and Energy Leaders Program (OSELP) April 24-25 for site visits at the Lab’s Morgantown and Pittsburgh campuses.

NETL researchers and scientists in Oregon had the opportunity to network with potential industrial collaborators in the area of material coatings and corrosion prevention during a tour of the Lab’s Albany campus by members of the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) Portland chapter Thursday, April 13.

NETL Director Brian Anderson, Ph.D., brought his Laboratory’s story of collaboration with industry, academia, and sister Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories that focus on development and deployment of innovative energy technologies during a panel discussion at National Lab Day at the University of Wyoming (UW) Wednesday.

NETL Director Brian Anderson discussed the Lab’s ongoing efforts to advance carbon management technology in hard-to-decarbonize sectors of the economy such as steel and cement production and petrochemicals in a keynote address during Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU) Energy Week in Pittsburgh.

NETL will share its expertise and research in materials sciences, spanning from high entropy alloys to gasification of plastics, among many other topics, at The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society’s (TMS) 2023 Annual Meeting and Exhibition scheduled for March 19-23 in San Diego. 

North Allegheny’s Marshall Middle School Team 1 captured first place at the 32nd Western Pennsylvania Science Bowl (WPASB) middle school competition, which was held Saturday, March 4. Twenty-five teams from the region competed in the event, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and NETL.
