Project Description

Archer Daniels Midland Corporation (ADM) is developing an integrated intelligent monitoring system (IMS) architecture that utilizes a permanent, continuously active surface seismic monitoring network for process surveillance and optimization. Specifically, this project aims to use a continuously active seismic source monitoring system, in addition to downhole temperature and pressure data, along with modeling to monitor, track, and optimize the injection of CO2 into the Mt. Simon saline reservoir. The project is being carried out at ADM's Decatur, IL site in conjunction with the Illinois Industrial Carbon Capture and Storage Project (ICCS) (Figure 1).

Project Benefits

The IMS is using a real-time closed looped model calibration to provide reliable forecasts of reservoir conditions that allow optimization of operation and maintenance activities. The permanent seismic network enhances reservoir surveillance by increasing the sensitivity of the monitoring system and improving subsurface resolution, thereby reducing the need for external seismic surveys. Monitoring the injection of the CO2 and the location and size of the plume is important to ensure CO2 containment as well as quickly detecting any CO2 leaks. The combination of these factors will reduce the cost and risk associated with geologic storage projects.
