Project Description

This project is developing and validating an integrated framework for coupled monitoring and modeling data to analyze the geomechanical impacts caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) injection. The approach combines satellite-acquired surface deformation data, microseismic monitoring data, and numerical modeling; it also leverages monitoring data sets from a large-scale carbon storage project (Big Sky Carbon Sequestration Partnership). The framework is expected to provide a cost-effective approach for monitoring surface deformation coupled to injection and the associated microseismic activity, thus providing a mechanism for evaluating reservoir integrity.

Project Benefits

The project is improving the understanding of geomechnical processes and impacts critical to supercritical CO2 injection operations. This will help the Storage Division advance tools and techniques to assess the geomechanical properties of reservoirs and sealing formations. Specifically, this project is using cost effective microseismic monitoring and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) surface deformation measurements at the Big Sky’s Kevin Dome large-scale injection site to evaluate these technologies’ effectiveness. These data will be analyzed and input into state of the art coupled modeling and inverse modeling to investigate pore-pressure perturbations and coupled geochemical/geomechanical processes.
