Project Description

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)/National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and Southern Company Services, Inc. will continue the operation and maintenance of existing test facilities at the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC) to offer third-party technology evaluation to reduce the cost of advanced power plants with carbon dioxide (CO2) capture. The NCCC includes multiple, adaptable slipstream units that allow simultaneous testing of third-party bench- and pilot-scale advanced CO2 capture and gasification technologies from diverse fuel sources at commercially relevant process conditions. The NCCC can provide support in the following areas: design, procurement, construction, installation, operation, data collection and analysis, and reporting in compliance with environmental and government regulations. Enzymes, membranes, solvents, sorbents, and their associated systems will be tested using actual flue gas from an existing coal-fired unit for post-combustion testing and actual syngas from an existing gasifier for gasification and pre-combustion testing at the NCCC test site in Wilsonville, Alabama. Testing of various solvents in the Solvent Pilot Test Unit will be performed to conduct emissions and degradation studies and to provide extensive data on physical properties of solvents. Overall, the test facilities will conduct the evaluation of advanced technologies, both domestic and international, to identify and resolve environmental, health and safety, operational, component, and system development issues, as well as to achieve scale-up and process enhancements in collaboration with the technology developers. An evaluation of DOE-sponsored projects, as well as projects from industry, universities, and other collaborative institutions, will provide a full spectrum of technologies to be tested at the NCCC.

Predecessor Project: DE-FC26-08NT0000749

Project Benefits

The ability of the NCCC test facilities to perform multiple tests simultaneously at various scales and to offer flexibility in capacity and process conditions will provide DOE with a wide range of data and information to accelerate the commercialization of CO2 capture technologies and enable coal-based power plants to achieve near-zero emissions at a low cost. This test campaign will support the DOE objective of 90 percent capture with 95 percent CO2 purity at a cost of $40/tonne of CO2 captured in advanced coal-fired power plants by 2025, and a cost of less than $40/tonne CO2 captured by 2035.
