Project Description

Siemens Energy Inc. will develop a ceramic matrix composite (CMC)-based design for Siemens’s Advanced Transition in support of 65 percent efficient gas turbines. The primary deliverable is a design concept ready for fabrication and test in a follow-on (Phase 2) project. Siemens’s patented Hybrid Oxide CMC system will be the basis for the design of this part.

Project Benefits

The program will develop a CMC-Based Advanced Transition (AT) design with reduced cooling requirements, thus enabling higher turbine inlet temperatures without increasing NOX emissions—crucial for developing the DOE’s goal of 65 percent efficiency in combined-cycle gas turbines. CMC application will further reduce cooling-air consumption and result in emissions and/or performance improvements beyond the current AT benefits.
