Project Description

The goal of this project is to generate pertinent creep-fatigue data and develop new lifetime models that will allow accurate prediction of the lifetimes of those fossil fuel power plant components that are subjected to flexible operation (e.g., load cycle following of renewable power generation). Such flexible operation can result in thermal-mechanical fatigue of components over long periods of time. The result can be premature failure of these components. Most existing coal fired power plants were not designed for this type of operation, and new advanced fossil fuel plants may need to include flexible operation in their thermal/mechanical design.

Project Benefits

Will lead to improvements to creep-fatigue data and lifetime models and will advance the development of advanced power plant designs, which will contribute to improvements in efficiency, operational flexibility, and lower operating costs.
