NETL Welcomes New Talent for a Summer of Innovation
Research associates collaborate in NETL’s Hybrid Performance Facility Lab, 2019.

Director’s Corner

by Brian Anderson, Ph.D.

Each year, NETL welcomes research associates to join our world-class researchers in driving innovation and delivering solutions for an environmentally sustainable and prosperous energy future.

For the next ten weeks, research associates will be part of a talented team of scientists and engineers who are making impressive breakthroughs in all kinds of energy technologies, from catalysts and methods to creating valuable products from domestic resources, to component development for highly efficient turbine systems and more to help mitigate carbon emissions.

The new additions to our Lab present a win-win situation. Research associates benefit from our team’s wide-ranging expertise and dedicated mentorship, and NETL benefits from the participants’ fresh perspectives and ideas. Research associates are an integral part of our NETL team, and the research skills participants develop through these programs will serve as a solid foundation for their future endeavors, helping to launch and advance positive careers in energy innovation.

Together, we’ll be advancing technologies to help meet ambitious climate goals of a decarbonized power sector by 2035 and a net-zero economy by 2050. We’ll be advancing innovations for carbon capture, hydrogen, and rare earth elements and critical minerals production, to name just a few. As a team, our research will provide positive impacts to the health of people around the world while improving our ability to live on planet Earth.

This year, I’m honored to welcome students from academic institutions across the nation, including minority-serving institutions. NETL is proud to do its part to build a diverse, sustainable professional and academic pipeline of next-generation engineers and scientists who are ready to take on the challenges of current and future energy systems.

I thank our mentors and I welcome all our research associates. I look forward to seeing the results of your summer research and the impacts you will make toward ensuring affordable, abundant and reliable energy that drives a robust economy and national security, while developing technologies to manage carbon across the full life cycle, and enabling environmental sustainability for all Americans.
