Fuel Flexibility

Fuel Flexibility research is being conducted to expand the operating conditions of current and future turbines to support energy independence and limit over-reliance on natural gas. Fuels under consideration include syngas, hydrogen, ammonia, landfill gases, distillate oils, and others. R&D to accommodate these fuels is focused on combustor design and chemical kinetics, turbine blade cooling, advanced materials/thermal barrier coatings, and innovative fuel injection/mixing schemes. The long term goal of this research is to allow gas turbines to operate on these alternative fuels with efficiency and emissions performance similar to that of natural gas.
