Funding Opportunity Announcement
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) today announced its intent to release a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) to support the creation of coalition teams comprising private industry; university; federal, state, and local government and tribal  personnel who will develop and implement strategies that enable each specific U.S. region to realize its full economic potential for producing critical minerals and materials and high-value, nonfuel, carbon-based products.
A new NETL-led study is shedding light on how interactions between small silver nanoparticles and carbon supports can boost the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide into useful chemicals.
NETL researchers focused on developing carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion technologies recently demonstrated that the material on which a catalyst is affixed, called a support, can have a dramatic impact on its performance. The discovery could lead to improved energy efficiency, boosted catalyst performance and a reduction the amount of expensive metallic catalyst materials needed for these systems, which will be crucial for meeting the nation’s decarbonization goals.

As technology advances and unlocks new applications, it also encounters new challenges, such as in data curation. However, the Energy Data Exchange, a virtual library and data laboratory built to find, connect, curate, use and re-use data to advance fossil energy and environmental research and development, has solutions for these problems.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) today announced the selection of 19 projects to receive $17.4 million to support novel, early-stage research at 17 U.S. colleges and universities. The funding will support projects that establish visiting scholars programs, create new academic curricula related to geosciences, and provide interdisciplinary training in humanities-driven science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
The University of Oklahoma has created an Advanced Emissions Management Laboratory as part of its NETL-supported methane mitigations project.
The University of Oklahoma (OU), in cooperation with NETL and industry partners, has developed an advanced retrofit kit for natural gas engines used in the gas production, gathering, transmission and processing sectors that cut emissions while enhancing performance.

NETL leadership joined local, state, and federal officials in helping FirstEnergy subsidiary Mon Power celebrate the completion of the company’s first utility-scale solar panel array — a carbon-free electricity (CFE) project made possible in part by NETL’s early first-of-its-kind commitment to purchase 100% of the power required to fulfill the electricity needs of its Morgantown, West Virginia Research Facility.
