Method for Exhaust Cleanup from Combustion Processes Using Mixed-Metal Oxide Based Catalysts

Opportunity

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has developed a method for removing pollutants from the exhaust stream of an internal combustion engine (ICE) using a multi-component mixed-metal oxide (MMO) catalyst system. This invention is available for licensing and/or further collaborative research from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory.

Overview

The method oxidizes unconverted fuel, COx, and particulate matter, and selectively reduces NOx, among other species. The invention uses one or more multi-component mixed-metal oxide (MMO) crystalline catalysts for the oxidation of soot/particulate matter.

Significance

The invention can remove toxic and environmentally damaging byproducts found in the exhaust gas from internal combustion engines.
The process creates advanced catalysts and methods of synthesizing catalysts that uses platinum group metals (PGM) in a more efficient way, increasing the longevity and decreasing overall costs of catalytic converters.
The invention can respond to new engine technologies requiring novel materials that are highly active and thermally stable under a range of exhaust gas treatment conditions.
The process uses low amounts of PGM catalysts while possessing synergistic redox functions that produce enhanced activity and performance under both lean and rich engine conditions, as well as during cold start-up temperatures as referenced in the new EPA, 40 CFR Parts 79, 80, 85, et al. Control of Air Pollution from Motor Vehicles: Tier 3 Motor Vehicle Emission and Fuel Standards; Final Rule.

Applications

The invention removes pollutants from the exhaust stream of an internal combustion engine using a multi-component mixed-metal oxide catalyst system.
