The National Methane Hydrates R&D Program
All About Hydrates

This 3 dimensional graphic shows the types of methane hydrate deposits including the Arctic Deposit and Deep Ocean Deposit. There are several arrows pointing to different areas on the graphic. On the front area of the graphic there are three arrows pointing upward which describe slow seepage of methane gas from below. Then there is a red area which represents trapped methane gas under pressure and above that a grey area representing impermeable solid methane hydrate embedded in mud. On the right side of the graphic, there are two text boxes. One says, Hydrate stability zone regions indicate vertical extents of from 1000 - 2000 feet and can cover large horizontal areas. The other box points to round grey masses and reads, Solid methane hydrate ice forms in bands and lenses close to bitterly cold surface. At the top of the graphic, which is the Artic deposit, there is a graphic of a drilling rig on frozen surface ground.
