North Slope Environmental Initiatives

Photo of Anadarko Drill PlatformAEO helps Alaskan North Slope oil and gas operators continue a long-standing tradition of safeguarding environmental values in the sensitive arctic region. Extensive research has been conducted and millions of dollars have been spent to protect the slope’s flora and fauna.

The “footprint” and impacts of oil operations today have been greatly reduced in recent years. Alpine, a likely prototype for future developments, was developed on just 0.2% of the field area.

A novel drilling rig was developed under a NETL project that dramatically reduces the surface footprint of arctic drilling operations and could one day eliminate the need for gravel pads and the temporary ice roads and ice pads that oil and natural gas companies now must use on the North Slope.

Key AEO projects today focus on ensuring that oil and natural gas operators minimize environmental impacts in their efforts to gain improved access to the North Slope.
