Coal & Coal Biomass to Liquids
DOE's laboratories and technology centers across the Nation house world-class facilities where more than 30,000 scientists and engineers perform cutting-edge research in a host of fields. To augment its own capabilities as the only national laboratory dedicated to fossil energy R&D, NETL has access to these other specialized resources for expertise in particular disciplines and research questions related to aspects of hydrogen and clean fuels. For example:
- Oak Ridge National Laboratory is developing a porous ceramic membrane for production of pure hydrogen from syngas, and will partner with two universities in investigating conversion of syngas to ethanol and other alcohol fuels.
- Argonne National Laboratory is developing a dense ceramic-metallic (cermet) membrane for separation of hydrogen, and will participate with several private sector partners in testing of an internal combustion engine fueled by hydrogen.
