A Technology to Mitigate Syngas Cooler Fouling

Reaction Engineering International (REI) is working to increase the reliability and availability of integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants by reducing fouling that occurs in the syngas cooler which is located downstream of the gasifier. The fouling is due to vaporized ash from the coal gasification process depositing on the inner walls of the tubes in the fire tube heat exchanger used in the syngas cooler. Current project plans include the development of a soot blowing technology tailored to the conditions that exist in a syngas cooler used at coal gasification plants. The new soot blower design will be based on an improved understanding of the governing mechanisms for syngas cooler fouling garnered from laboratory-scale experiments, analysis of syngas cooler deposits, modeling, and guidance from industry. Improving availability and reliability of the syngas cooler will improve the availability of the overall IGCC plant and thereby reduce the cost of electricity.
