Gasification - Closely Aligned Programs
Large-Scale Demonstration Projects
Large-scale demonstration projects are designed to
demonstrate
that a particular new technology, or suite of new technologies, is ready for commercial competition and deployment. Below are the DOE demonstration programs that support, have supported, or will support gasification technologies.
Two commercial Integrated Gasification Combined-Cycle (IGCC) plants were built in the 1990s by industry with DOE program support in the Clean Coal Technology (CCT) demonstration program — one at Wabash River in Indiana and the other at Polk Power Station in Florida.
Clean Coal Power Initiative (CCPI) is a joint government and industry program to provide large-scale, cost-shared demonstrations of advanced coal-based power generation technologies. Three new CCPI projects that support gasification were selected in 2004.
FutureGen is a Presidential research initiative to build the world's first integrated sequestration and hydrogen production power plant. It is assumed that the core of FutureGen will be based on IGCC technology.
