Clean Coal Demonstrations
Navigation Tips

The Clean Coal Technology Compendium website was recently reorganized and this Navigation Tips page was added to assist users in finding the information they need.

The Compendium is arranged as three parallel websites, each covering one of the major Clean Coal Demonstration programs:

  • Clean Coal Power Initiative (CCPI)
  • Power Plant Improvement Initiative (PPII)
  • Clean Coal Technology Demonstration Program (CCTDP)

In addition to the three major programs, the Clean Coal Technology Roadmap provides the Department of Energy, the Coal Utilization Resource Council, and the Electric Power Research Institute consensus view of the future of clean coal. The right hand tool bar lists recently posted project and program documents. Selecting any of the three major programs provides a similar set of options:

Bibliography: The Bibliography section of each Clean Coal Program contains three choices:

  • Demonstration Project Documents: This category contains all of the reports and fact sheets produced for a given project. The projects are divided by category: Environmental Control Devices, Advanced Electric Power Generation, Coal Processing for Clean Fuels, Industrial Applications and Terminated and Withdrawn Projects. Once a project is selected, the information is organized in a similar manner. At the end of the project title is a link to a Project Brief, which is the PDF version of the project fact sheet that appeared in the latest Annual Program Update. The first entry after the project title is the Project Fact Sheet, which is a two-page project synopsis prepared by NETL (such Project Fact Sheets currently only exist for PPII and Round-1 CCPI projects). Following the Project Title or Fact Sheet (if one exists) under Program Publications are all of the reports prepared for the project. These usually include the Final Report, Interim Progress Reports, Environmental Reports, Project Performance Summary, DOE Post-Project Assessment, and any relevant Topical Reports.
  • Program and General Documents: As its name implies, this category provides links to documents about the specific program, like solicitations and conference proceedings. It also provides links to general categories of documents like the Post Project Assessments, Project Performance Summaries and Topical Reports discussed above. In some cases, like the Annual Program Update , the documents cover all three major programs and are therefore accessible from all three web pages.
  • Clean Coal Related Information: This category is common to all three programs and links to a page listing topics that are related to Clean Coal but were not specifically a part of the three major programs. For example, there is a significant amount of literature available on Hazardous Air Pollutants (including mercury) through DOE programs other than the major coal demonstration programs. Links to much of this information are available through Clean Coal Related Information. There are 15 topics in all listed in this category.

DOE Assessments: DOE Post-Project Assessments are prepared at the conclusion of each project and provide a concise project history including project objectives; technical, environmental and economic results; and an evaluation of the technology's commercial potential. The DOE Assessments are posted in the order they were prepared, with the most recently published at the top of the list. To date, no DOE Assessments have been prepared for CCPI projects and therefore that page has yet to be populated.

Project Performance Summaries: Project Performance Summaries are prepared at the conclusion of each project, and provide a concise synopsis of the project results from an operational, environmental, and economic perspective. The Project Performance Summaries are posted in the order they were prepared with the most recently published at the top of the list. To date, no Performance Summaries have been prepared for PPII or CCPI projects and therefore those pages have yet to be populated.

Topical Reports: Topical Reports are prepared periodically on clean coal projects or groups of related projects, and provide concise synopses of the project or topic. The Topical Reports prepared to date cover exclusively CCTDP projects and therefore are only accessible from that program. One of the topical reports (Topical Report #18, Environmental Benefits of Clean Coal Technologies) was more general in nature and therefore is accessible from all three programs. As additional Topical Reports are prepared, they will be posted under the applicable program.

Clean Coal Today Newsletter: Clean Coal Today is a quarterly newsletter of the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy (FE), Office of Clean Coal.  Among other things, Clean Coal Today highlights progress under the Clean Coal Power Initiative, the Power Plant Improvement Initiative, and historically the original Clean Coal Technology Demonstration Program.  Reporting on coal R&D performed at government laboratories, as well as in conjunction with stakeholders, the newsletter provides key information on FE's coal-related activities, most of which are directed toward near-zero emissions, ultra-efficient technologies of the future. The links to the Clean Coal Today Newsletter have the same destination for all three programs, and the Newsletter is available from Winter 1990 through the present. The most recent Newsletter is always listed in the right hand tool bar under Publications and Projects.
