Clean Coal Demonstrations
Round 1 Information

Eight projects were selected by the Department of Energy in January, 2003 under Round 1 of the CCPI program (see TechLine).  Subsequently, two projects were withdrawn by the participants.  CCPI is a multi-year clean coal technology demonstration program with private sector cost-share being at least 50 percent.  Private sector participants for the remaining projects selected in Round 1 will contribute approximately $670 million, well in excess of the department’s requirement for 50 percent cost-sharing.

One of the projects is directed at new ways to comply with the President's Clear Skies initiative which calls for dramatic reductions in air pollutants from power plants over the next decade-and-a-half.  For more specific information on this project, click on the title below:

  • TOXECON Retrofit for Mercury and Multi-Pollutant Control on Three 90 MW Coal-Fired Boilers

Three other projects are expected to contribute to President Bush's Climate Change initiative to reduce greenhouse gases. The first two projects (below) will reduce carbon dioxide, a primary greenhouse gas, by boosting the fuel use efficiency of power plants. The third project will demonstrate a potential alternative to conventional Portland cement manufacturing, a commercial process that produces large amounts of carbon dioxide. For more specific information on these projects, click on the titles below:

The remaining two projects will reduce air pollution through coal gasification and multi-pollutant control systems while at the same time make use of low-value "waste" coal feedstocks that are causing environmental concerns in these regions. For more specific information on these two projects, click on the titles below:

Withdrawn Projects

  • Integration of Advanced Emissions Controls to Produce--Next Generation Circulating Fluid Bed Coal Generating Unit (Project Withdrawn)
  • Commercial Demonstration of the Airborne Process (Project Withdrawn)
