Advanced Research Product Line
The nature of the FE Advanced Research Product Line is that virtually all of the products are in a pre-emerging phase of product development. Additionally, because this team is by its nature crosscutting in its activities, it allows a more integrated approach to evaluation of potential development areas.  As concepts are proven to have reasonable potential, they are graduated to functional product lines to complete the emerging phase of development.  As a corollary function, this team evaluates input from other product teams and from potential stakeholders to assist in determining the direction of emerging research areas.

The Advanced Research Product Line is broken into two areas of development. The goal of the Materials Program is to provide a materials technology base to assure the success of coal fuels and advanced power generation systems being pursued by DOE-FE. The Advanced Metallurgical Processes research conducted by the program directly contributes to Fossil Energy's objectives by providing information on the performance characteristics specified for the current generation of power systems to develop cost-effective materials for solving environmental emission problems related to fossil fired energy systems.

FE Advanced Research Roadmap
A framework is being developed to both map and to provide a means of measuring the research portfolio of the Advanced Research Product Team.  The portfolio is envisioned as meeting the AR Team mission by sponsoring pioneering research (the seeds for the future), nurturing and implementing fundamental research (the heart of the program), and in cooperation with other product lines, facilitating the transition of new technologies to practice (expertise and resource sharing).  These stages need to be balanced and maintained for a successful long term program.

  • Pioneering Research- Short duration projects which seek to demonstrate the need and value of additional research.

  • Implementation - Projects which provide needed data or fundamental process information required to implement new methods, materials, or concepts.  Also, projects which seek to explore topics which utilize unique approaches to address known issues (innovative concepts).
  • Transition- Projects which are partnered with other Product Lines to facilitate implementation of new technology or provide needed data to enable product performance.
