CO2 SEQUESTRATION
Objectives:
Develop new technologies to promote and accelerate the production of biological organisms that efficiently take up high levels of CO2 from flue gas and the atmosphere for greenhouse gas sequestration/recycling
Determine the factors needed to promote the occurrence of whitings in the ocean and in large freshwater lakes. Whitings result when, under certain conditions, marine or freshwater microalgae develop a calcium carbonate “shell”. As the number of organisms developing these deposits increases, a white precipitate develops in the ocean. The deposit is a whiting, and is thought to be responsible for structures like the white cliffs of Dover. Estimates by some investigators suggest that promoting growth of whitings could sequester all of the excess CO2 in the biosphere.
Investigate the potential of certain plants, i.e., microalgae, to efficiently take up high levels of CO2 from either power plant flue gas or the atmosphere. Determine via laboratory cultures which freshwater or marine microalgae efficiently biofix CO2 for eventual recycling through the labile CO2 pool.
