Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships - Validation Phase
Plains CO2 Reduction Partnership
The Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership is a diverse group of public and private sector stakeholders working together to capture and store carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from stationary sources in the Northern Great Plains and adjacent areas. The PCOR Partnership is coordinated by the Energy & Environment Research Center (EERC) at the University of North Dakota and includes the states of Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming as well as a broad range of project sponsors.
PCOR will conduct four technology validation field trials and two investigations of carbon sequestration concepts. The field trials will involve storage and comprehensive monitoring of CO2 in depleted oil reservoirs, unmineable coal seams, and wetlands. Two of three geologic field tests will evaluate enhanced oil recovery and CO2 sequestration in carbonate systems, while the third geologic project will examine enhanced coalbed methane recovery and CO2 sequestration in unmineable lignite seams. The Partnership's terrestrial effort will use a Northern Great Plains wetlands complex to demonstrate carbon offsets market development.

Title: Injection of CO2 into Carbonate System at
Beaver Lodge Oil Field, North Dakota |
CO2 from the Dakota Gasification Company gasification plant will be used for simultaneous sequestration and EOR in Amerada Hess Corporation’s Beaver Lodge oil field in northwestern North Dakota. The project will evaluate the potential for geological sequestration of CO2 in a deep carbonate reservoir for the dual purpose of CO2 sequestration and EOR. The target injection zone will be the Duperow Formation. The project will also test the accuracy with which CO2 storage capacity can be predicted, demonstrate MMV technologies and protocols, and provide field validation testing of sequestration technologies and infrastructure approaches.

Title: Injection of CO2/H2S (acid gas) into
Carbonate System at Zama, Alberta |
This field validation test conducted in the Zama field of Alberta will evaluate the potential for geological sequestration of CO2 as part of an acid gas stream that also includes high concentrations of H2S for the concurrent purposes of CO2 sequestration, H2S disposal, and EOR. The project will provide insight regarding the impact of high concentrations of H2S on sink integrity, MMV, and EOR success within a carbonate reservoir.

Title: Injection of CO2 into Lignite Coal Seam in the Williston Basin |
CO2 will be injected into economically unminable lignite seams to determine the suitability of these strata for both CO2 sequestration and coalbed methane production. The project will determine whether long-term contact with CO2 affects the physical stability and gas storage capacity properties of lignite and the hydrodynamic properties of the seam. In addition, the practicality and economics of using CO2 to enhance natural gas recovery from lignite seams will be evaluated.

Title: PPR Wetland/Grassland Terrestrial Sequestration Demonstration |
PPR wetland/grassland sequestration demonstration that will provide carbon offsets, develop protocols and standards, provide a market-based carbon sequestration strategy and serve as a model for terrestrial sequestration worldwide. The project will consist of a field study for collection of scientific information necessary to facilitate market development; the identification, development, and application of alternate land use management practices that will result in GHG reductions; and the development of appropriate protocols for the eventual development of carbon offsets to be sold in voluntary GHG markets.
