Description: This 90-minute live webcast, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Solid-State Lighting Program, presented an overview of the DOE ENERGY STAR® criteria for solid-state luminaires. The criteria were issued in September 2007, and will become effective September 30, 2008.
Presenters discussed the underlying strategy and details of Categories A (near term) and B (long-term) applications, and provided an overview of the product qualification process, testing requirements, quality assurance, and tools and resources for manufacturers and program sponsors. The webcast also looked at future plans to keep pace with rapid technology improvements, including expansion of Category A products and ratcheting of efficiency targets over time. The criteria cover residential, commercial, industrial, and outdoor lighting SSL applications and address both near term and future product performance.
Background: This was the fourth in a series of live webcasts DOE is hosting, focused on key topics of interest related to solid-state lighting. The first in the series was an overview of DOE’s Five-Year SSL Commercialization Support Plan, the second presented a broad introduction to LED technology, and the third focused on luminaire performance in the lab. Powerpoint files and streaming video of these past webcasts are available through the Technical Information Network for SSL. Future topics may include Economics of LEDs, LED Packaging, Luminaire Efficacy, and Thermal Management.
