DOE Funding Opportunities for Solid-State Lighting

DOE supports research, development, and demonstration of promising solid-state lighting (SSL) technologies. As a technology matures, different funding mechanisms are available to support its development, as detailed below. SSL research partners and projects are selected based on such factors as energy savings potential, likelihood of success, and alignment with the SSL R&D plan.

DOE funding mechanisms used in the Solid-State Lighting Program include:

  • Basic Research — Precedes the mission of the DOE Solid-State Lighting R&D program. Grants supporting basic energy science are provided by DOE’s Office of Science through an annual solicitation process. Learn more
  • DOE/NETL SSL Core Technology and Product Development – SSL Core Technology Research projects focus on applied research needed to advance the technical knowledge base for SSL to be used for general illumination applications. SSL Product Development projects seek to develop or improve commercially viable materials, devices, or systems. New Core Technology and Product Development funding opportunities are posted on the DOE SSL website home page and announced through SSL UPDATES.
  • DOE/NETL SSL Market-Based Activities – SSL Market-Based Activities include the DOE SSL Technical Information Network, technology demonstrations, and other market-based efforts.
  • Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) — Seeks to increase participation of small businesses in federal R&D. Supports annual competitions among small businesses for Phase 1 (feasibility of innovative concepts) and Phase 2 (principal research or R&D effort) awards, and includes topics related to solid-state lighting – Learn more
