Project Description

The National Energy Technology Laboratory’s (NETL) On-site Research (ORD) goals for this project are: to increase capacity factor and reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) for lower cost of electricity (COE) via refractory development; improve efficiency by enabling/increasing syngas heat recovery by reducing convective fouling and increase the understanding the impact fuel properties and additives have on carbon conversion, slag, and fouling; apply dynamic simulation, control and virtual plant technology to provide "training experience" for new gasification technologies with carbon capture; enable low-rank coal and mixed feed gasification performance prediction and improvements by developing a hierarchy of models with uncertainty quantification coupled with NETL's in-house kinetic data base, C3M and developing industry ready technology to address proposed EPA mercury rules.

Project Benefits

The gasifier optimization and plant supporting system technologies under development are targeted at increasing gasifier availability and efficiency, improving performance, and reducing the capital and operating costs of advanced gasification plants. Ongoing R&D projects are developing more durable refractory materials, creating models to better understand the kinetics and particulate behavior of fuel inside a gasifier, and developing practical solutions to mitigate the plugging and fouling of syngas coolers.
