Beneficial Use of Carbon Dioxide in Precast Concrete Production

The design, fabrication and assembly of bench-scale systems to test dynamic (Figure 1) and static (Figure 2) carbonation of fiber-cement panel and concrete block production have been completed (Figure 3).
In optimized laboratory conditions, the carbon uptake for concrete blocks and fiber-cement panels was shown to range between 16-25 percent and 16-30 percent, respectively following some initial pre-curing with water.
The CO2 recovery system using a self-concentrating absorption method has been successfully optimized to reach a capture efficiency of approximately 90 percent.
