Project Description

The objective of this project is to demonstrate an integrated system of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture in an industrial setting and geologic sequestration in a deep sandstone formation. The CO2 used in this project is produced by Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) as a by-product in the production of fuel grade ethanol. ADM will capture approximately one million tons of CO2 per year using dehydration and compression. The compressed CO2 is sequestered in Mt. Simon Sandstone Formation (saline reservoir). The ethanol plant and the sequestration site are both located in Decatur, Illinois. The project team members include ADM, Illinois State Geological Survey, Schlumberger Carbon Services, and Richland Community College.

Project Benefits

The ICCS Program large-scale industrial demonstration requirement will be met by the collection and sequestration of CO2 from a concentrated stream from an industrial facility. The project will continue the development of compression, dehydration, injection and MVA technologies as part of the project life cycle. The ICCS Program target will be met through the capture and sequestration of one million tons per year of CO2 emissions once the project is at full capacity.

Project Status

Equipment installation and commissioning is in progress. Development of the Class VI CO2 injection well has been initiated.
