Optimization of Pressurized Oxy-Combustion with Flameless Reactor

Unity Power Alliance (UPA), a joint venture between the Italian company ITEA and ThermoEnergy Corp, is investigating the optimization of pressurized oxy-combustion with a flameless reactor. They will develop a basis for modeling conditions in a flameless reactor and inlet conditions for a heat recovery steam generator. A range of cycles will be evaluated at varying operating pressures to assess the effectiveness of heat recovery by vapor condensation; the optimum size and design of the combustor and the pressure drop in the recirculation pipes; and various purities of oxygen to determine how the variations affect the operation and performance of the air separation unit, the CO2 separation system, and the oxy-combustion process.
ITEA is developing detailed designs for building a bench scale flameless pressurized oxy-combustion system. The bench scale system will be constructed and transported to Georgia Tech's Carbon Neutral Energy Solutions (CNES) laboratory. The lab will operate the unit under a variety of pressure conditions ranging from 5 to 70 bar to identify optimum overall system efficiency and confirm system performance with three different coal types. The CO2 concentration, flue gas and slag from the operation will be analyzed to confirm the fate of criteria and toxic pollutants.
