NETL continues its involvement in the environmental issues associated with both the utilization and disposal of coal combustion byproducts. NETL currently funds many projects covering a variety of environmental issues associated with coal utilization byproducts (CUB) through the Combustion Byproducts Recycling Consortium.
With the EPA regulatory decision in December 2000 regarding the regulation of mercury emissions from coal-fired electric utilities; NETL has begun to focus on the effect of mercury controls on EW&R-Coal Utilization By-Products. To this end, we are funding projects that will look at the fate of mercury in residues.
