Three technologies advanced by the Office of Fossil Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in collaboration with strategic partners have been recognized by R&D Magazine as among the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the commercial marketplace within the past year.

Texas CO2 Capture Demonstration Project Hits Three Million Metric Ton Milestone Project Uses Captured CO2 for Enhanced Oil Recovery
On June 30, Allentown, PA-based Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. successfully captured and transported, via pipeline, its 3 millionth metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) to be used for enhanced oil recovery.   This achievement highlights theongoing success of a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and managed by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).

Four New Technologies Proposed by NETL for Transition to the Marketplace to Receive DOE Funding
Four innovative energy technology research initiatives proposed by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and involving partnerships with the private sector are among 54 projects at 12 national laboratories that will receive $16 million worth of funding to help move promising energy technologies to the marketplace.

DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory Awards Site Administrative Support Contract
The National Energy Technology Laboratory announced today that it has awarded its Site Administrative Support (SAS) Services contract to SSC-Deltha, LLC. Awarded through a competitive solicitation process, the SAS contract provides administrative, data management, clerical, records management, library, copy center, training, communications, website, event management, educational outreach, graphics and multimedia support services to NETL sites in Morgantown, W.Va.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Albany, Ore.; Anchorage, Alaska; and Sugar Land, Texas.

Following the preliminary rounds of competition held today at the Community College of Allegheny County South Campus, four teams emerged from a field of 34 teams representing 21 regional middle schools to qualify for the championship rounds of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Science Bowl for middle schools. The final rounds of competition are scheduled for Wednesday, March 9, at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in South Park Township.

NETL Researcher Selected to Receive Nation’s Highest Award for Young Scientists
Dr. Paul R. Ohodnicki, a materials scientist at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), has been named by President Obama as a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). The PECASE award is the highest honor the U.S. government can bestow on scientists or engineers in the early stages of their research careers. Dr. Ohodnicki was selected for his outstanding innovation and technical leadership, which have advanced foundational materials science and led to the development of new applications and inventions in materials technology.

Following the preliminary rounds of competition held today at the Community College of Allegheny County South Campus (CCAC), four regional high school teams emerged from a field of 57 scholastic team entries to qualify for the championship rounds of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Science Bowl scheduled for Wednesday, March 9, at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in South Park Township.

NETL Sponsors 25th Southwestern Pennsylvania Science Bowl Competition
For the 25th consecutive year, the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) will sponsor the Southwestern Pennsylvania (SWPA) Science Bowl for high schools and middle schools. The preliminary rounds of this year’s Silver Anniversary Science Bowl competition for high schools will be held on Saturday, February 20. The middle school preliminaries will be held on Saturday, February 27. Both competitions will take place at the Community College of Allegheny County’s (CCAC) South Campus in West Mifflin, Pa. Final rounds for both high school and middle school will take place on March 9 at NETL’s site in South Park, Pa.

Team of NETL Scientists Honored By ASM International for Their Work on Platinum Chromium Alloy for Coronary Stents
Scientists at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), and their colleagues, were recently honored with a 2015 ASM Engineering Materials Achievement Award from the materials science and engineering society ASM International. The NETL team received the prestigious award for their work on the development, transfer, and successful commercialization of a novel platinum-chromium alloy used in next-generation coronary stents. The award was presented at a banquet held during the 2015 Materials Science and Technology meeting on Tuesday October 6th in Columbus, OH.

Mary Sullivan, a project manager at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), has received the prestigious Silver Award for Non-Supervisory Professionals from the Federal Executive Board in recognition of her project management, engineering, and communication skills; effective teamwork and leadership; and community service.

NETL's David Miller Receives 2014 Arthur S. Flemming Award
The Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration has selected David Miller of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) as a recipient of the 2014 Arthur S. Flemming Award recognizing outstanding men and women in the federal government. Dr. Miller was chosen in recognition of his innovative leadership as Technical Director of the Department of Energy's Carbon Capture Simulation Initiative (CCSI). The Initiative provides an essential and much needed capability to improve the development of carbon capture and related technologies. The multi­disciplinary team that Dr. Miller guides includes members from several national labs and universities and has successfully created innovative computational tools and models to accelerate the scale-up and deployment of cost-effective carbon capture technologies. CCSI is a collaborative partnership among researchers at NETL, the Los Alamos National Lab, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Carnegie Mellon University, West Virginia University, Princeton University, Boston University, and the University of Texas.

NETL's Barbara Kutchko Receives 2015 Energy Leadership Award
The Pittsburgh Business Times has selected Dr. Barbara Kutchko of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) for an Energy in Leadership Award. Dr Kutchko was chosen in recognition of her research into foamed wellbore cement and oil and natural gas production in western Pennsylvania—contributions that are helping to developing the energy industry in western Pennsylvania in an environmentally responsible way. The Pittsburgh Business Times will present the award to Dr. Kutchko’s at an awards program on May 14, 2015 at the Hilton Garden Inn Southpointe.

Stephen E. Zitney Named American Institute of Chemical Engineers Fellow
Stephen E. Zitney of the U.S. Department of Energy ’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has been named as a Fellow by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). To be named a Fellow is to achieve the highest grade of membership offered by the organization and is a reflection of the esteem with which the chemical engineering community regards Dr. Zitney for his lifetime of work in his field.

NETL Researcher Receives Award for Outstanding Innovation in Energy
The Carnegie Science Center has honored Dr. Shiwoo Lee of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) with an Outstanding Innovation in Energy Award. Dr. Lee was chosen in recognition of his development of a manufacturing method that significantly improves the efficiency of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs)—an efficient, combustion-less, virtually pollution-free power source capable of using fossil fuels. Dr. Lee will receive his award on May 6, 2016, at the 20th Annual Carnegie Science Award celebration at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland, PA.

West Virginia Native Selected to Present at the Council for Chemical Research Meeting
Jordan Musser of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has been selected to present at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Council for Chemical Research (CCR) in the “Rising Star” Poster session. The theme of this year’s Council for Chemical Research meeting is Disruption: Impacts and Opportunities for the Chemical Enterprise. Posters presented at the “Rising Star” session will be delivered by individuals nominated by the sector in which they work, in expectation of the influence and advancements they will contribute to their field in the coming year.
