2015 University Turbine Systems Research Workshop

The 2015 UTSR workshop was held November 3-5, 2015 at the Georgian Terrance Hotel, near the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta, Georgia. The theme was “The Advanced Manufacturing for Gas Turbines”. The workshop was well received with a total of 138 attendees from OEMs, universities, national labs, and small businesses. The opening session included welcoming remarks by Dr. Steve Cross, Executive Vice President for Research, Georgia Tech and an overview of the DOE Office of Fossil Energy’s Advanced Turbines Program by NETL Turbine Technology Manager Richard Dennis. The workshop included two panel discussions involving gas turbine OEMs, developers and practitioners, and covered topics such as advanced manufacturing technologies for turbine platforms and related R&D needs and challenges. Also included were tours of Georgia Tech’s gas turbine combustion research facilities and the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute. Dr. Thomas Kurfess, Professor and HUSCO/Ramirez Distinguished Chair in Fluid Power and Motion Control at Georgia Tech was the keynote speaker. Dr. Kurfess recently completed an assignment to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy where he advised policy makers on advanced manufacturing. David Garrison, Vice President – Engineering, Quality and Planning, of Delta Airlines gave a special after-dinner presentation. Various Turbines experts gave both oral and poster presentations, in three technology areas; Materials/Aerodynamics/Heat Transfer, Combustion, and Pressure Gain Combustion/Oxy-Fuel Combustion, for a total of seventy two in all.
