AVESTAR® Team Completes IGCC Power Plant Startup with 3D Virtual Immersive Training System
With collaborators from Fossil Consulting Services, NETL completed two weeks of IGCC power plant startup testing on its 3D virtual immersive training system (ITS) under development with Invensys Operations Management in Houston. By connecting the ITS in real-time to NETL’s high-fidelity IGCC dynamic simulator, the team started the power plant as a collaborative crew of control room and field operators. Transient startup operations were conducted for all major sections of the IGCC plant including the air separation unit, gasifier, syngas cleanup, CO2 capture, and combined cycle for power generation. Interactions with the 3D virtual plant included starting/stopping pumps, motors, air coolers, and agitators; engaging/disengaging slurry mill clutches; opening/closing manual valves; tripping electrical breakers; viewing level, temperature, and pressure gauges; and displaying equipment transparencies and animations for tanks, pumps, columns, turbines, and the gasifier. The team also tested more than 20 virtual plant malfunctions (e.g., mechanical failures, leaks, fires) and observed their visual and audible impacts, as well as alarms. The 3D virtual ITS is scheduled for operational deployment at NETL’s AVESTAR® Center in Morgantown, WV in late July 2012.
