2007 West Virginia Science Bowl Information
2007 West Virginia Science Bowl Important Dates
The 2007 West Virginia Regional Science Bowl® will be held Saturday,
February 3, 2007, at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy
Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown. In case of harsh weather, the make-up
date will be February 10, 2007. Teams consist of four student competitors, one
student alternate, and one or more coaches (usually a science or math teacher).
Boy and Girl Scout troops, Science Clubs, and multiple home schools within a
single county may form a team if they choose to do so. Additional information
concerning rules and regulations will be mailed to interested teams in the near
future or may be found on our web site, www.netl.doe.gov.
The West Virginia regional competition is limited to 16 teams, the top two teams
from each of the state's eight Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) regional
competitions. RESA coordinators host a competition similar to the Science Bowl® for
all public, private, and home schools in their region. Teams should contact their
RESA for information on competing to go to the State Finals in Morgantown . These
preliminary tournaments provide a formal mechanism to determine the top teams
in the state in addition to encouraging many more students to take an interest
in math and science.
The two winning teams from each RESA region must submit
entry forms on-line by January 10, 2007. If two teams from each RESA have not been identified by January
10, 2007, entry forms will be accepted from third place teams which participated
in a preliminary tournament elsewhere in the state. Entry forms for the WV State
finals will be available on-line at http://www.scied.science.doe.gov/nsb/states/wv.htm .
The winner of the West Virginia Regional Science Bowl® will receive a 5-day
(April 26 - 30, 2007) all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in
the national competition held at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
The winning team will also take possession of the traveling trophy for one year,
a banner for their school, and other individual prizes.
At the national level, the 2006 Science Bowl® National Champions, the State
College Area High School from State College, PA, won an all expense
paid research trip to France , a trip on May 1 to the White House where they
were hosted by First Lady Laura Bush, and $1,000 for the school's science department.
Other top 2006 winners included North Hollywood High School of North
Hollywood , CA; Santa Monica High School of Santa Monica, CA ;
and Albany
High School of Albany, CA. Each of the 16 teams that qualified for the
national competition received $1000 checks for their school's science department.
